As you may be aware, Windows 10 will reach its end of life on October 14, 2025. After this date, Microsoft will cease providing free security updates, non-security updates, and technical support for this version. However, this doesn't mean your PC will stop working; it simply means you'll need to manage your device's security and performance independently.
If you've tried upgrading to Windows 10 but encountered compatibility issues and error messages, don't worry—there are still options available to you.
Here are five options to consider:
- Ignore the Deadline: Although not recommended, you can choose to disregard the end-of-support date. Without ongoing security updates, your business could be vulnerable to cyber threats and viruses. You'll need to find alternative security solutions, which might not be as robust. Additionally, technical support and non-security updates will also end, potentially affecting your computer's performance.
- Switch to Linux: If you're not ready to give up your PC and have the technical skills, you can replace Windows 10 with the Linux operating system. Transitioning to a new OS can be challenging, so only proceed if you're prepared to handle potential issues.
- Upgrade "Incompatible" PCs via a Technical Loophole: If your PC failed the upgrade due to compatibility issues, you might still be able to upgrade by using a workaround. ZDNET provides a guide on this, which involves a minor registry edit and ensuring your PC is set up to use Secure Boot with the Trusted Platform Module (TPM). Although you may receive warnings about unsupported installations, this doesn't mean your data will be immediately at risk; it simply means the manufacturer won't be liable for any issues.
- Pay for Microsoft's Windows 10 Security Updates: Microsoft will offer Extended Security Updates (ESUs) for Windows 10 on a subscription basis for up to three years. However, this option can be costly. For businesses, the first year costs $61, doubling to $122 in the second year, and $244 in the third year, totaling $427. Educators benefit from reduced pricing, starting at $1 in the first year. Note that these updates are cumulative and exclude technical support, so you must purchase them consecutively.
- Purchase a New PC: If your current device is outdated, buying a new PC compatible with Windows 11 is a solid choice. New computers generally offer enhanced speed, security, and productivity. Ensure you back up your data thoroughly before making the switch to avoid data loss.
Consider these options carefully and choose the one that best suits your needs and circumstances.
